What is the Sunshine Coast WordPress Meetup group?
The WordPress Sunshine Coast meetup group has been running monthly since 2014, bringing together local WordPress users, developers, and business owners on the Sunshine Coast. Whether you’re completely new to WordPress or you’ve been tinkering with sites for years, the group welcomes anyone interested in learning more about the platform.
WordPress meetups happen all around the world and are part of what makes the WordPress community special – the willingness to share knowledge and help each other out, whether you’re in New York, Melbourne, Brisbane or right here on the Sunshine Coast.
The Meetups are a regular community that brings together an interesting mix of people. You’ll find freelance developers, small business owners managing their own sites, agency owners, marketing professionals, and plenty of beginners who’ve heard about WordPress but aren’t sure where to start. Everyone’s welcome, regardless of experience level.
Unlike online forums or video tutorials, the meetup offers face-to-face conversations about real WordPress challenges. The group is strictly commercial, and sole purpose is to bring together people who use WordPress to help grown knowledge and skills, share experiences and meet with others in the community.
If you’ve been wondering what actually goes on at these monthly gatherings, here’s some insight into how the WordPress Sunshine Coast community works and who it’s really for.
The WordPress community advantage
Working with WordPress can feel isolating, especially when you’re stuck on a problem at 2am and Google isn’t giving you the answers you need. One of the things that makes WordPress great is it’s flexibility, but this also means there are multiple ways to achieve something – each of them with pros and cons. Having a community and experience to lean on here is invaluable. The WordPress community has always been built around the idea that sharing knowledge makes everyone better at what they do.
At the Sunshine Coast WordPress meetup, this plays out in simple ways. Someone mentions they’re struggling with site speed, and three people immediately jump in with different approaches they’ve tried that have helped. A small business owner asks about eCommerce options, and a developer who’s built dozens of online stores walks them through the pros and cons of various plugins.
At a Meetup earlier this year I was really glad to share some knowledge with a local business owner who makes handcrafted leather belts, and was looking for ways to help improve the SEO and visibility for his WordPress website.
I’ve been lucky to have some other experts share their knowledge around a huge range of topics like full site editing, security, maintenance, static sites and so much more.
It’s not about showing off expertise – it’s about the relief of discovering you’re not the only one who’s wrestled with a particular WordPress (or just general website) problem. The conversations often continue after the formal meetup ends, with people chatting about what they’re working on, problems they’re having or what is working well for them.
What happens in a Sunshine Coast WordPress Meetup?
The WordPress Sunshine Coast meetup follows a fairly relaxed format that’s evolved over time based on what works for the group. We typically meet on the first Friday of each month. Meetups are currently held at the wonderful Salty Spaces Coworking Space in The Wharf, Mooloolaba.
Most meetups start with a brief 30-60 minute presentation or workshop on a specific WordPress topic. This might be anything from setting up proper backups to customising themes, or even non-technical subjects like website content or choosing the right hosting provider. The presentations can often be practical – if someone’s showing a technique, they’ll demonstrate it on a real site.
After the formal presentation, the floor opens up for general discussion and problem-solving. This is often where the most valuable learning happens. People bring their laptops and actual WordPress issues they’re facing.
The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming. There’s no pressure to participate in discussions if you’d rather just listen and learn. Some people come regularly and contribute actively, while others drop in when they have a specific question or when a topic particularly interests them.
The impact of ongoing learning
The most valuable thing about the group is the ongoing learning that happens. Someone might learn how to set up a contact form one month, then come back with questions about customising it the next. Or they’ll mention they’re struggling with something completely different, like organising their media gallery or setting up a simple online store.
It’s not about dramatic before-and-after stories. It’s more about having a place to ask questions when you’re stuck, getting different perspectives on how to approach a problem, or discovering WordPress features you didn’t know existed.
WordPress can be super simple and straightforward on the surface, but there’s actually so much depth with what is going on. Between themes, plugins, customisation options, security considerations, and performance optimisation, there’s always something new to learn or a better way to do something you thought you’d already figured out.
Add to that the fact that WordPress itself is constantly evolving – with regular updates, new features, and changing best practices – and it becomes clear why ongoing learning is so valuable. What worked perfectly six months ago might not be the recommended approach today, and a plugin that was essential last year might have been replaced by built-in WordPress functionality.
Having a group of people who are all navigating these changes makes it much easier to stay current without feeling overwhelmed by the constant evolution.

If you’re curious about what happens at the WordPress Sunshine Coast meetup, the best way to find out is simply to come along to one. We meet on the first Friday of each month, and you can always find information about upcoming events on the Meetup page.
There’s no need to prepare anything or bring specific questions – though if you do have WordPress challenges you’re working through, someone will likely have suggestions or can point you in the right direction. Bring a laptop if want it for notes or to show something specific, but it’s definitely not required.
The group works best when people contribute what they can, whether that’s sharing their own experiences, asking questions that spark useful discussions, or simply being part of the conversation. If you’ve got WordPress knowledge to share, great. If you’re completely new to WordPress, you’re equally welcome and you can lean on some of the more experienced people in the group for help.
You can find more information about the group on the official Meetup group page here. Come along when you can – there’s always something new to learn and usually someone facing the same WordPress puzzles you are.
If you’re interested in doing a talk or presentation, I’d love to hear from you!
